FIRE ANT ALERT FOR CENTRAL QUEENSLAND
Although fire ants have primarily been detected south of the Sunshine Coast, a recent case has emerged in Central Queensland—putting our entire region at increased risk.
Why it matters:
Fire ants are aggressive, invasive pests that can cause serious harm to people, pets, livestock, and our environment. Early detection is critical to stopping their spread.
What to look for:
- Mounds with no obvious entry hole—often dome-shaped and crumbly
- Ants that are reddish-brown with a darker abdomen
- A swarming or aggressive response when the nest is disturbed
How to reduce risk:
- Avoid moving soil, mulch, turf, or pot plants from known fire ant zones
- Check equipment and vehicles for soil or ants before transporting
- Stay vigilant around new landscaping, building sites, and disturbed ground
- Report any suspicious ant activity immediately
If you see something suspicious:
- Take a photo
- Avoid disturbing the nest
- Report it directly to the Queensland Department of Agriculture or your local pest professional
